Summary
As an Environmental Intern, you will help support projects that balance reliable energy delivery with environmental responsibility. Working alongside environmental professionals, you'll gain hands-on experience in permitting, compliance, and sustainability initiatives that help protect natural resources and support the communities APS serves.
Potential Projects and Experiences
- Partner with environmental professionals on projects involving environmental permitting, compliance assurance, and operational support for utility infrastructure, generation, transmission, and construction activities.
- Participate in field visits and construction site inspections to learn how environmental requirements are implemented in the field, including permit compliance, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and natural resource protection measures.
- Analyze environmental data, research federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, and assist in developing recommendations that support permitting strategies, compliance obligations, and business decisions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across environmental, engineering, construction, operations, and project management functions to support project development, permitting, and environmental compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Build relationships through networking, mentorship, and professional development opportunities while gaining hands-on experience with environmental programs, regulatory agencies, and utility industry operations.
- Contribute to environmental initiatives involving areas such as air quality permitting, hazardous waste compliance, environmental due diligence, spill prevention, pollution control, and environmental planning.
Who We’re Looking For
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program with a record of continued academic achievement.
- Pursuing studies in Environmental Science, Biology, Geology, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Policy, Pre-Law, or a related scientific or technical field.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Collaborative, curious, and eager to learn from both field and office-based experiences.
- Interest in environmental stewardship, sustainability, environmental compliance, construction, or related operational activities.
- Preferred: GPA of 3.0 or higher.
This paid, temporary full-time internship spans 10 weeks during the summer. Interns receive mentorship, professional development, opportunities for site visits, networking, and more.
Minimum Requirements
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university undergraduate or graduate degree program.
- Must show ongoing achievement in areas of study and training.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3.0 GPA or higher.
Major Accountabilities
1) Performs simple to intermediate analysis and designs. May assist in preparing business/engineering plans, designs, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations and studies.
2) Assists in research, business documentation, studies or technical reviews. Conducts analyses, investigations, verifications and summarizes results or findings in written reports or oral presentations.
3) Utilizes internal resources to learn business/engineering operations/functions and apply learning in completion of work assignments.
4) Coordinates efforts with other disciplines, and/or departments in achieving project goals and task assignments.
5) Performs other related duties as required.

CIP Requirement:
This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.
Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).
In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.
- Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
- Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
