Summary

The System Improvement Cable Journeyman duties may include but are not limited to, performing work on underground distribution system (primary and secondary), terminating cables (elbows, T-bodies, Y-splice), switching orders and clearances, pulling 1100, 750, cable and 1/0, feeder upgrades (install backbone) to the Electric Distribution Systems and associated components of the underground transmission system. Work schedules may differentiate (day/night) based on business needs and work may be performed statewide. This role is not subject to call outs. Distribution underground begins at the hot tap or crimped line connection between the line and cutout or disconnects and the customer service meter. Other work includes underground distribution system construction, as well as assisting setting transformers & switching cabinets, working with wire pullers and installation of new network vaults & VISTA Radial vaults. Work schedule is Monday - Friday: 5:00 am - 1:30 pm

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Must qualify as a Journeyman Electrician or Journeyman Lineman
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class "A") required
  • Must live reasonable distance (30 minutes) from headquarters
  • This position requires working with aerial equipment, which has weight restrictions of 300 lbs or less
  • Out of town work is required
  • Qualifying test (written & hands-on) may be administered
  • Reasonable and necessary overtime is required
  • The established headquarters for this position is subject to relocation to the HUBwest Service Center, a facility that will be located 38 miles west of downtown Phoenix, on a date to be determined by the Company.

Testing Information

 

Tests are only administered to referred candidates. More information about our tests and the testing process can be found HERE. 

 

A written [paper and pencil] test will be administered.
A test using a computer with keyboard will be administered.
A hands-on skills test will be administered.
A physical ability test will be administered.

Role Type

Onsite: Requires work to be performed in the field and/or at an APS facility.  Depending on the responsibilities of the role, this may include, but is not limited to, working at a power plant, job site, or in the community. 

  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).  
  • Role types are subject to change based on business need. 

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person). 

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location. 

  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).  
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.  
  • Role types are subject to change based on business need. 

Home based: Home based employees primarily work from their home offices and come into an APS facility on an as-needed basis. 

  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).  
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.  
  • Role types are subject to change based on business need. 

Eligibility:

Must live or relocate within reasonable distance to the headquarters. Reasonable distance is defined as one (1) hour for Metro and State Region locations. Reasonable distance for Troublemen, Local Representatives, and Substation Technicians is defined as thirty (30) minutes for Metro locations and forty-five (45) minutes for State Region locations. Failure to accept a job offer due to the reasonable distance requirement specific to the position will be counted toward the bid restriction as described in Article 13, Section 11

  • For jobs in departments (System, Reliability, Hotstick) that require the majority of the work be performed out-of-town and as such, employees/crews are not required to report to the established headquarters unless directed by Leadership; the reasonable distance requirement will be waived*.

    *This will not apply to Troublemen, Local Representatives or Substation Technicians

 

CIP Requirement:

This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.
