Summary

Project Manager III / IV | Strategic Transmission

 

As a Project Manager III / IV, you'll lead the delivery of critical transmission and infrastructure projects that strengthen Arizona's electric grid and support the state's growing energy needs. Working across engineering, construction, operations, finance, and external partners, you'll oversee you'll oversee multiple complex capital projects that often span 3–10 years and range from tens of millions to several hundred million dollars in value. Your leadership will help ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in support of APS's commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable energy to the communities we serve.

 

What Your Day Would Be Like:

  • Lead the planning and execution of complex transmission and infrastructure capital projects from concept through construction and closeout.
  • Partner with engineering, construction, generation, finance, procurement, environmental, and operations teams, along with external contractors and consultants, to successfully deliver major projects.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, contracts, risks, and resources while balancing safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and business objectives.
  • Build strong relationships with internal leaders, utility partners, regulatory agencies, contractors, and community stakeholders to drive project success.
  • Monitor project performance, proactively resolve challenges, and communicate progress, risks, and key decisions to executive leadership and project stakeholders.

 

Who We're Looking For:

  • Experience managing large, complex capital projects within the electric utility, energy, transmission, generation, construction, or related infrastructure industries.
  • Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate work across internal business partners, engineering firms, contractors, and vendors.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience managing project schedules, budgets, contracts, risks, and stakeholder expectations across multi-year initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills with the ability to influence decisions and build collaborative relationships.
  • A safety-focused leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to delivering high-quality projects that support long-term business objectives.

Minimum Requirements

Project Manager III | Strategic Transmission

 

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Systems or related field from an accredited college or university
  • PLUS eight (8) years job-related project management experience.

 

Project Manager IV | Strategic Transmission

 

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Systems or related field from an accredited college or university
  • PLUS twelve (12) years job-related project management experience.
  • In lieu of bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and/or experience as a Project Manager or in positions defining and/or managing project scopes, timelines, budgets and delivery equaling 16 years.
  • PMP certification
  • Experience managing large, complex, high impact projects.
  • Experience in directing multi-discipline teams.

 

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

 

  • Extensive understanding of project management processes, principles and methodologies.
  • Experience in Transmission Projects. 
  • Advanced functional/technical knowledge of the business units line of business, practices, and procedures.
  • Strong critical thinking and creativity skills along with the ability to exercise sound judgment by making decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Able to understand needs and values of stakeholders and team members and apply that understanding to motivate behaviors and results.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with all levels of personnel and other departments.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication, negotiation and people management skills.
  • Adapts to changing environment, shifting priorities and uncertainty.

 

Major Accountabilities

1) Plans and successfully executes large, cross-functional, multi-disciplinary, high-impact projects. Develops comprehensive execution plans in accordance with internal process methodologies.

2) Presents comprehensive project plan to project sponsors and management. Obtains all necessary stakeholder support and sponsor and executive approvals.

3) Oversees and leads project planning, resourcing, staffing, progress reporting, people management, vendor relationships and troubleshooting. Performs high-level negotiation with internal/external stakeholders and consultants throughout all aspects/phases of project.

4) Ensures schedules, budgets and resources are managed effectively.

5) Provides ongoing project updates to project teams, business management, project sponsors, executive leadership, board of directors, and external constituents including regulatory agencies, customers and public officials.

6) Ensures project deliverables and overall results meet or exceed sponsor and stakeholder expectations.

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person). 

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location. 

  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).  
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
