Radiation Protection Tech

Summary

The Radiation Protection Technician performs radiological protection activities such as radiological surveys, sampling and analysis to ensure the health and safety of the general public and employees from the hazards of radiation and to ensure compliance with regulations, standards and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

A two-year Associates degree in Radiation Protection-related coursework from an accredited college plus two (2) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions. In lieu of an Associates degree, High school diploma/GED plus three (3) years of experience in Radiation Protection positions (of which one year should be Radiation Protection technical training) OR a Radiation Protection certificate from an accredited college plus two (2) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions. (Meets minimum education and experience requirements per Palo Verde Procedure 01DP-0EM08, Appendix A.)

SR Minimum Requirements

A two-year Associates degree in Radiation Protection-related coursework from an accredited college plus four (4) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions.  In lieu of an Associates degree, High School diploma/GED plus six (6) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions (of which one year should be related technical training) OR National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians (NRRPT) certification OR a Radiation Protection certificate from an accredited college plus five (5) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions.  (Meets or exceeds minimum education and experience requirements per Palo Verde Procedure 01DP-0EM08, Appendix A.)

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications: Knowledge of radiological fundamentals, mathematical concepts and plant systems. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Qualified in INPOs Common Industry Radiation Protection tasks.

Nuclear requirement:
Any PVGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member. Any PVGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVGS.

Major Accountabilities

1) Performs job coverage, including Medium and High Radiological Risk work activities, to ensure the highest level of radiological safety is provided during online and outage work activities.

2) Executes duties associated with Radioactive Material packaging and Limited Quantity and Exempt Radioactive Material Shipments, Radiological Effluent Monitoring and Dosimetry Issuance and In-Vivo Monitoring. Implements Palo Verde administrative procedures to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations, and with Palo Verde procedures and policies.

3) Performs radiological surveys, provides accurate documentation, and establishes necessary radiological postings as required to maintain positive control for work activities being conducted within Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCA). Conducts radiological surveys necessary for unrestricted release of materials, equipment, and personnel.

4) Evaluates personnel contamination monitor and portal monitor alarms and performs personnel decontamination activities to ensure radioactive material is controlled within the Radiologically Controlled Area (RCA).

5) Maintains positive control of contamination, radioactive material, radioactive waste, and radioactive sources by using good ALARA practices and engineering controls. Ensures personnel access into the RCA meets Radiation Work Permit (RWP) requirements.

6) Completes evaluations to determine necessary actions required to maintain occupational exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Responsibilities include preparing Radiation Work Permits (RWPs).

7) Participates and progresses through an accredited Radiation Protection Technicians training program by successfully completing assigned task qualifications.

8) Inspects, calibrates, and maintains radiological protection instrumentation, dosimetry and sampling equipment.

9) Performs on-site and public protection actions as a member of the Emergency Response Organization including Radiological Field Assessment Team duties and in-plant surveys and sampling.
