The Nuclear Training Section Leader plans, coordinates and supervises the daily operation of a group of training instructors responsible for the development and implementation of accredited training programs which improve line performance and meet regulatory requirements.
Accredited training programs are: Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Radiation Protection, Chemistry.

Minimum Requirements

A four year Bachelors degree in Engineering, Applied Science or other job related discipline from an accredited college or university plus four (4) years of nuclear power plant experience in Operations, of which at least one (1) year must be in a Training position; OR, two (2) years in the maintenance and/or implementation of an Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) accredited nuclear training program or naval nuclear training program; OR, two (2) years in a supervisory position in Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Radiation Protection and/or Chemistry.

In lieu of bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and/or nuclear power plant experience equaling eight (8) years in Operations, of which at least one (1) year must be in a Training position; OR, two (2) years in the maintenance and/or implementation of an INPO accredited training program or naval nuclear training program; OR, two (2) years in a supervisory position in Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Radiation Protection and//or Chemistry.


Selected candidate will be required to obtain a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) certification with two (2) years. (Meets or exceeds minimum education and experience requirements per Palo Verde Procedure 01DP-0EM08, Appendix A.)


Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications: 

Experience with the Systematic Approach to Training. Experience as a Naval Master Training Specialist. Experience as an accredited training program leader.

Hold/have held a SRO License/Certification.


Nuclear requirement:
Any PVGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member. Any PVGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVGS.

Major Accountabilities

1) Supervises the planning and execution of assigned accredited training program to improve human performance through training and qualification. Ensures industry experience is used to improve program effectiveness.

2) Develops and maintains effective working relationship with internal customers and external regulators at all levels. Works across organizational boundaries to accomplish training department and station goals, review lesson plans, and maintain quality instructional delivery. Resolves operational or technical issues within the functional area.

3) Establishes and monitors short-term work priorities for the team to ensure maximum utilization of staff and resources. Implements approved procedures and policies to ensure compliance with company standards, NRC regulations, INPO accreditation criteria and other codes, standards and regulatory requirements.

4) Manages the hiring, training, salary administration, performance management and safety of team. Enhances instructional/technical capabilities of team members through professional development, coaching and evaluation.

5) Prepares and manages team budget. Monitors expenditures of unit ensuring prudent use of company money and resources.

Flex Role:
This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work. Employees will have two options to choose from: 

  • APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.
  • Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.


*Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
